Appointment of Adjunct Professor Wayne Quilliam to RMIT
Wayne Quilliam is honoured to announce his appointment as Adjunct Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
“With title comes responsibility and receiving this honour is an affirmation of cultural recognition. I am excited to be aligned with RMIT and look forward to the future evolution of succinct and realistic discussion relating to Indigenous Affairs.”
“Twenty five years of working in rural, remote and urban Indigenous communities in Australia and overseas has given me a unique perspective regarding the visualisation of our people. Fortunately, an earlier decision to remain impartial and politically neutral allows me the freedom to be a conduit between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. This freedom will see me living with and photographing a remote community with no running water or fresh food one day and the next delivering a key note address to the country’s top CEO’s at a five star hotel”.
This appointment will allow practitioners and academics together with students to gain an understanding into the intricate workings of Indigenous communities throughout Australia and the cultural similarities of Indigenous people and practices across the globe. My methodology will allow people to explore similarities and differences on their own and encourage divergent thinking.
Seeing similarities and differences is a fundamental cognitive process and the visual arts in particular photography, my area of expertise, will assist learners in connecting with our culture through the power of digital imaging. I will endeavour to bring a new perspective to the education system, one which is current and challenges people to ask themselves “What do I really know and will this information assist me to explore new ideas?, this concept fosters relationships and connections to a new level of understanding regardless of preconceived ideas.
I humbly accept this position and unreservedly commits to sharing my knowledge, experience and cultural expertise to challenge and confront the tired notions inherent in the representation of Indigenous Australia.
